Is Blogging Still Relevant? I Experimented & Here Are The Results
I’ve been coming across debates about whether or not blogging is still relevant, or worth it.
When I talk about blogging, I’m referring to content marketing, which implies a strategy behind the blogging.
If blogging is done with a strategy in mind, and a content schedule is adhered to, then yes— blogging is still entirely relevant and I would even argue crucial for traffic growth.
Just a couple of months ago, I wanted to test what would happen if I committed to publishing a new blog post every single day on one of my niche websites.
Yes, this was a lot of work considering I also maintained all of my other tasks simultaneously. And I wanted to keep the newly published content not just frequent, but of good quality too. Still though, I wanted to see what kind of impact it would have.
Let me show you what happened…
Yes, Blogging is still worth it
It was the middle of September when I decided to commit to publishing blog posts much more frequently. At that time, my monthly traffic on this particular niche website was around 1,400 visitors.
I started out adding about two new blog posts each week, and I did this for a couple of weeks.
Then, around the first of October I went all out, deciding to publish a new blog post every single day. I did this until the first of December.
Here is what has happened over the past two months with five new blog posts getting published each week, while still maintaining quality.
In September, when I finally decided to work on this niche website and treat it like a business, the site was only averaging 1,600 visitors per month and 2,700 page views.
Remember, I started out in mid-September, publishing about two new posts each week. Then, around the first of October, I started publishing five new posts each week (one a day). Here are the numbers for October.
In October, I had 769 more visitors and over 1,400 more page views compared to the previous month. The snowball was slowly beginning to build…
Move on to November, I’m still churning out one new blog post every single week day, and the numbers just kept going up.
In November, I was getting almost 3,000 more unique visitors and over 3,500 more page views on the site each month! That’s pretty decent growth over the course of two months.
We’re 10 days into December as I write this article, and already I have 3,766 unique visitors and 4,296 page views this month, which means the numbers are continuing to rise.
Here is what I did, in a nutshell:
Wrote quality blog posts based on keywords related to that niche website
Used my organic SEO techniques (I can’t tell you everything! but I do offer a Squarespace SEO Service which sets you up with 8 blog posts you should write)
Then shared the blog post to Facebook, Reddit, Pinterest, and Instagram. Though this niche website does NOT have a following on any of these because I just simply haven’t put in the time, but I did it anyway.
No paid ads whatsoever. Just blogging.
Here’s a breakdown of traffic sources in case you’re curious:
The only two monetization methods I have on that site currently are: Adsense & Amazon Affiliate links, and I should add that my revenue from both of those has increased substantially due to the traffic increase, which makes perfect sense.
I wish I had the time to keep cranking out one quality post each day, but I’ve had to slow down to one a week for now. In a month or two I’d like to go through this process again just to keep growing that site over time.
So, yes, I think blogging still works.
