This is a series I’ve been doing to celebrate the successes of my web design & SEO clients. You can read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, and Part 6 as well. Please note that SEO rankings are ever-evolving, and that each article reflects rankings at the time of publishing.
My Fundamental One-Time Squarespace SEO Service and Squarespace SEO Expert course are two of my most popular offerings.
The approach to SEO that I take is very straightforward: I don’t deliver a bunch of graphs and spreadsheets at the end of the project, just one document listing out target keywords, blog post topics the client needs to create (including URL to use), and instructions on what to do moving forward for long-term SEO growth.
Simple enough.
Yet more and more of my clients are hitting Google Page 1 for their target keywords, using only my organic SEO, no paid advertising.
This is probably the most rewarding part of my business, to be honest.
While I love designing websites and I love when clients are thrilled upon seeing their new site for the first time, what I really love is seeing that site hit Google Page 1, because this goes beyond pretty design. This is actual business and brand growth, and this means I’m helping my clients reach their goals.
(Which feels good!)
So let’s take a look and see how last year’s clients websites are performing!
Getting Squarespace Websites to Rank on Google Page 1 in 2023
…using organic seo techniques!
*Note: This list is referring to keywords that have been researched and shown to be getting actively searched on Google, this is not an arbitrary list of keywords. For example, I can type in “tiffany davidson squarespace” and my website will appear at the top of Google, but no one is searching that keyword, instead they might be searching for an established keyword such as ‘squarespace web designer’ and it’s those already active and established keywords we want to target.
Client: All My Stars Photography
Ranking on Google Page 1 for the following target keywords: Already a blog post is ranking at the top of Google for the keyword “wedding venues in santa monica mountains.” This is a difficult market to break into with lots of established photographers in this particular area, so blogging (and time) will be especially crucial for this website.
Client: Rydawell
Ranking on Google Page 1 for the following target keywords: camper van conversion washington; and ranking at the very top of Google for keywords custom van conversion companies washington state, van build seattle, and seattle van builders. I see this site is also climbing up page 2 and 3 for other more general (non-location-specific) keywords.
Client: Clara Rice Photography
Ranking on Google Page 1 for the following keywords: commercial photographer san jose, commercial photographer santa cruz, editorial photographer san francisco, childrens commercial photography bay area
Client: The Find Bridal
Ranking on Google page 1 for the following keywords: bridal gowns sample sale miami, affordable wedding dresses miami, bridal shop coral gables, wedding dresses coral gables
Client: Nomad Gaming
Ranking on Google page 1 for the following keywords: casino slot machines for sale, slot machine supplier, slot machines for sale, wholesale slot machines
Client: Bold City K9
Ranking on Google page 1 for the following keywords: best dog training jacksonville fl, dog training fernandina beach fl, dog training amelia island, dog boarding and training jacksonville fl, best puppy training jacksonville, jacksonville professional dog trainer
Client: Elegant Lighters
Ranking on Google page 1 for the following keywords: high end lighters for sale; and—most importantly for the business model—is ranking on Google page 1 Shopping results for almost all product categories/keywords like “alfred dunhill lighters” and “st dupont lighters” because of individual product SEO (the site is synced with Google Merchant otherwise products would not show under Google Shopping results).
Client: Coda’s Events
Ranking on Google page 1 for the following keywords: best wedding planners melbourne australia, best wedding planners st louis, best event planner melbourne australia, destination wedding planner st louis, destination wedding planner melbourne
Some websites created at the very end of 2023 are already ranking on Google page 2. My client Colleen Simonds, for example, is already on page 2 for some important keywords like ‘best pittsburgh interior designers’ and ‘interior design pittsburgh pa’ and we did not send her site live until December 2023. I’m very happy with how quickly that went; at this rate she’ll likely be ranking on page 1 for target keywords before the end of summer 2024.
Observations in 2023 regarding SEO for specific types of websites/niches
Vacation rentals are really difficult to rank for organically on Google because websites like AirBnB, VRBO, and Booking.com gobble up all the top search rankings and it’s very hard to compete with them
Online yoga studios are also very difficult to rank for- it’s just such a saturated market and takes years of website presence and active SEO blogging to break into; it’s much easier to target a local audience right off the bat
Websites targeting keywords related to the health industry are also difficult to rank for because there are so many high authority websites already taking up the first page or two of results e.g. caregivers, birth services, assisted living, etc.
It’s also difficult to rank as a travel agent because of all the aggregate and high-authority websites that occupy Google page 1 and 2 real estate; this becomes much harder if you’re wanting to target a nationwide or international audience, rather than a local clientele
