2.1 Necessary Initial Questions

All SEO begins with questions. the answers to these questions are our roadmap for research.
With any SEO project, I begin with questions.
There are questions that must be answered as a necessary first step to guide keyword research and to hone in on the target audience(s) for the site.
It’s important that you (or your client) spend time with these questions and provide thorough and thoughtful responses.
If you plan to start offering Squarespace SEO services after finishing this course, I recommend creating a questionnaire on your site that you can send clients to so they can answer these questions. This is a great way to initiate next steps and secure a project, too.
Now, for the questions:
Describe the range of work you do, the products you sell, the services you offer, the content you create, etc.
Describe the ideal visitor to your site. What might they be searching for on Google?
When your ideal visitor arrives to your site, what frame of mind are they in? Seeking information or inspiration? Ready to purchase? If your ideal visitor stopped by your website, what would you want them to do before they left? Contact you? Book an appointment? Make a purchase? Subscribe to your newsletter? Share your content with others?
Describe your industry and how you fit into it. Newcomer or established? ARTISAN or mass market? Local, regional, national, worldwide?
What makes you or your business unique, competitive, or appealing? in what ways do you stand out from your competition?
in which ways do i want to monetize this website? selling services, digital or physical products? advertising? affiliate links? etc.
any Keywords you already know you want to target for:
These keywords all help shine light on the overall marketing strategy of a website.
Usually when someone decides to invest time or money into a website, they have goals in mind they want that website to help them achieve.
Before you start blogging or designing, it’s best to have a clear strategy laid out. Otherwise, you are trying to build and design a home without first having a blueprint.
I understand the creative and artistic nature can be an approach of “let’s just wing it, go with the flow, and see what happens.” And I have taken this approach on numerous websites of my own in the past. So I speak from experience when I say that no matter what your website is about, having a strategy in advance will make all the difference.
Implementing a strategy doesn’t have to be boring, either! This is a time to dream and imagine what your website could do for you.
Personally, my own websites have earned me a lucrative full-time income via services, digital products, advertising, and affiliate links.
I’ve been asked to do book deals, and I’ve even been contacted twice by cable TV channels wanting my husband and I to be on television shows! All because they “found me on Google.” So I want you to understand how endless the possibilities can be when you have good SEO, when your target audience is actually able to find you!
Answering the above questions thoroughly is the first step to this process, so be sure to do that before moving to the next lesson.
