Remember: search engines prioritize titles
In the previous lesson, I emphasized the importance of the title and URL of each blog post. This is true for the rest of your site, too.
Blog post titles, page titles, and headings are all examples of titles.
These titles show in the browser tabs and search results and are a key factor for Google indexing and ranking.
One of the lesser known ways to really optimize the search engine performance of a Squarespace site is by taking advantage of the SEO Title Format and SEO Site Description.
For each page (and blog post) there are fields for SEO title and SEO description that you need to utilize, in the proper way.
Two key factors to bear in mind when writing SEO titles and descriptions:
Make sure to include your target keyword for that page in both title and description (you need to do this tactfully, more on that in a bit)
Keep titles between 50-60 characters and descriptions between 150-160 characters (I use wordcounter.net when drafting titles and descriptions)
understanding visibility of the site meta title and description
This is how SEO titles and descriptions show up in search engine results:
For each page and blog post of your site, you want to make sure the corresponding target keyword for that page is included in your title and description.
In the next lesson you’ll see exactly where these fields are located.
Now you know about SEO title and descriptions and the importance of optimizing those fields.
Ok! Now it’s time to begin the on-site implementation phase of this course where we’ll learn how to apply the SEO to our site!
Be sure to let me know in the comments below if you have any questions about the Keyword Research phase before moving on.
